Periodontic Assistant Training

Periodontists specialize in the soft tissues of the mouth. The periodontist assistant has administrative duties that include greeting patients, record keeping, updating insurance information and note transcription. They set up exam rooms prior to use, and during the exam assist the doctor. Lab functions such as assisting in making plaster impressions and fittings may also be required. Proficiency with computers, good customer service skills, and equipment maintenance skills can all be among the duties. In addition, processing X-rays, taking blood pressure and pulse, inquiring about medical history and informing patients of post operative procedures and care may be required.

Periodontist assistants are part of a growth industry, expected to rise 30% by 2020, according to diplomaguide.com. Median annual salaries are $35,000 as of 2012, according to education-portal.com.
